Adriana Varejão

Adriana Varejão

This is the first English-language monograph on the career of Brazilian artist Adriana Varejão, in which her diverse body of work is explored in depth, from her earliest paintings in the 1990s to her most recent multimedia installations. Her rich and diverse artistic oeuvre is fueled by the mythic pluralism of Brazilian identity and its histories. Drawing upon the aesthetic traditions and visual legacies of colonialism and transcultural exchange in Brazil and beyond, Varejão has reconceived the practice of painting by fusing mediums, surfaces, and artistic lineages in unprecedented ways.

The fully illustrated volume organizes Varejão’s oeuvre into several conceptual groupings: “Cartographies,” “Antropofagia,” “Mestizaje,” “Baroque,” “Sauna and Baths,” and “Azulejo.” It features essays by the book’s editor and Gagosian director Louise Neri, curator Paulo Herkenhoff, and art critic Luisa Duarte; a biographical essay by art historian Angela H. Brown; and an interview with Varejão by Pinacoteca de São Paulo director Jochen Volz, who curated her recent Brazilian retrospective.
